The San Diego High School 1st Battalion is a United States Army JROTC battalion Located In San Diego, California. It currently has about 100+ cadets, divided into 3 companies: Alpha, Bravo & Charlie.


History[]

Established in 1919 shortly after WWI, it was the first AJROTC battalion in San Diego. All of its instructors at the time were WWI Veterans. It replaced the previous Cadet Club, which was similar to JROTC, but you would automatically enlist after graduation.[?]

Notable Cadets[]

CPT. Jennifer Moreno[]

A former battalion commander, brigade staff member, top marksman and outstanding cadet, she graduated in 2005(?). She went on to the University of San Francisco to earn both her nursing degree and officer's commission in the US Army. She later joined the 75th Ranger Regiment as part of the cultural support team.

CPT Moreno was Killed in action on October 5, 2013 during a raid in the Zhari District of Afghanistan.[1] She was posthumously; promoted to Captain, Awarded the Combat Action Badge, Bronze Star (which was later upgraded to Silver Star), the Purple Heart, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, And the NATO Medal. [2]

Legacy[]

In 2022 the VA hospital in La Jolla was renamed in honor of Captain Moreno. The ceremony was supported by a color guard from SDHS AJROTC, Moreno's former unit. [3]

Color Guard - Both varsity and freshman

Archery - Participated in national competition in 2022 and 2023 in Sandy, Utah

Regulation Drill - Includes; Platoon, squad, and Individual

Exhibition Drill - Armed and Unarmed

Academic Teams - Academic League (similar to Jeopardy) and JLAB
